2,000 L.A. City Employees Look to Join SEIU and the Coalition of L.A.

Faced with the toughest city budget crisis in decades, nearly 2,000 city professional employees voted to have stronger representation with SEIU. LA City workers in two bargaining units--MOUs 8 and 17--showed clear favor to SEIU, with a majority of the counted ballots cast for SEIU.

"Thousands of us are continuing down the path to SEIU to build a stronger future during these tough economic times," said Nady Maechling of MOU 8. "I am so glad we are one step closer to being with SEIU and I can't wait to finish what we started."

In the election between SEIU and EAA, the ballot count lasted for more than 24 continuous hours and involved the Employee Relations Board, the State Mediation Service, City elections workers, SEIU and EAA.

Throughout the tally, which concluded today at 8:40 am, EAA issued frivolous objections and sought to prevent the counting of hundreds of ballots across all six MOUs.

The following is a summary of the count:

  • MOUs 8 and 17 showed clear favor to SEIU and a majority of the counted ballots in each of those MOUs were cast for SEIU.
  • MOU 19 showed deep dissatisfaction with EAA, with more than 44% of employees voting to join SEIU, but not enough to meet the 50% + 1 threshold.
  • MOU 20 is complicated by challenges.
  • The majority of employees in MOU 21 and MOU 1 voted to stay with EAA.
