Over a thousand community members and county workers gathered at the LA County Hall of Administration on Monday to speak out against the Governor's budget proposal that would deny basic health care and home care to millions of children, students, seniors and people with disabilities. The spirited rally drew all sides of the community: students, teachers, home care workers, clients of social and mental services and county workers.

LA County Community Protest Budget Cuts (56)

Together we marched to the Ronald Reagan State Building in downtown LA to send the Governor and the Legislature our message: we want a common sense approach to the budget that includes a fair balance of spending cuts and taxes for corporations, big oil and tobacco. While Corporations in California pay the lowest taxes of any state, the budget cuts could devastate the most vulnerable people.

"If these budget cuts go through, I may lose my home, my daughter could be institutionalized and my cancer patient could die," says Pixie Toso, a homecare worker and SEIU member who provides care for a person with cancer while her daughter undergoes therapy for cerebral palsy. "It's too much to bare. These cuts could make a lot of single parents like me homeless and hungry."

For millions like Pixie, we will continue to put the pressure on the Governor and Legislator for a common sense budget. L.A. County supervisors Monday passed a $23-billion budget we are expecting $236 million in state cuts.
