El Monte Workers Reach Out to Community in the Recession
By Lewis Rudnick

During this rough period we wanted to reach out to the community. So we're building a coalition with local officials, management, residents and businesses to address the current crisis.
Between our new website, weekly newspaper ads supporting city services, and everyday contacts, we're keeping the local community informed.
Businesses throughout the community have supported the website. It's growing daily, with:
• city services
• events
• local businesses information
• budget information
• news of assembly bills that will affect the community
In February city workers agreed to a 10% work furlough until February 2010 to help prevent layoffs of our co-workers and reduction of services. In return the Mayor and City Council agreed to form a Joint Labor-Management Committee to find solutions.
We are staying active on budget issues and will be involved in every step to recovery. We expect city management's commitment to do everything possible to prevent further cuts.
The Mayor and City Council also passed a 5/5/09 resolution supporting Employee Free Choice to make sure workers have a voice on the job.
Our membership has always fought and always will fight to preserve what makes El Monte a great place to live and work.
