LA City Employee Furloughs Will Hurt Services

LA City employees are learning that the City’s furlough proposals would mean deep cuts to services. Impacts to services include:

  • Traffic delays: traffic will suffer with delays in new programs and the loss of millions of dollars in state and federal funding for traffic projects
  • Service delays: Furloughed Fleet Services mechanics mean delays in trash pick-up, sewer maintenance, streetsweeping, potholes being filled, grounding of Police and Fire helicopters, wild dogs being picked up.
  • Library closures: Libraries will close two Fridays a month and will have less security to protect children
  • Impact on parks: Sandboxes, play areas and restrooms will be dirtier, trash cans will overflow, pool hours will be shortened and swimming programs canceled, more graffiti
  • Zoo conditions: Animals will be cooped up longer, lines to get in will grow, the petting zoo will close, restrooms will be dirtier
  • Convention Center: The convention center will lose business to San Diego and Anaheim, costing the city millions of dollars and losing market share for years to come

SEIU and the Coalition are challenging the legal basis of furloughs and expect to win, but a legal remedy could take months.
