My Thoughts on Employee Free Choice and the Tobacco Tax

Carolyn-Consoli_Ventura-County_80x80.jpgby Carolyn Lucille Consoli Veterans and the Employee Choice Act: Transitioning from the Navy/Naval Reserves to the civilian world was very difficult for me; working for the private sector as an “at will employee” wasn’t what I thought I served our country for. Being a Union member and having a union job has brought a sense of dignity back to my life and with that being said all Veterans should have the right to sign their name to form or join a union. This is our government and a freedom we need to create and keep. I served our great nation for 23 years both on active duty and the reserves and I want to continue serving our community as a public servant. It’s time to use our voices, our minds, and hearts through action, to take our government back away from the corporations. Why are we even debating the tobacco tax? I work for Ventura County Public Health- Tobacco Prevention and Education Department. One of our programs is specifically tailored to meet the needs of the sixth grade students through our “Tobacco Bus of Horrors” program. I train 6th – 8th graders to become peer educators and they in turn provide the tobacco prevention education to the sixth graders. If we don’t have the tobacco tax approved this will eventually effect the funding for this great program. We need to put our children first, and fight with everything we have to make it a better world for them. Make your calls to our legislators and the governor!
