L.A. County Employees Shocked at Reports Regarding Substance Abuse Nonprofit

Tarzana Treatment Center has a reputation in Los Angeles County for providing quality services, but recent reports about self-dealing shocked some County employees who deal with public health issues.

"No one should get rich on public funds designated to help people get on a road to recovery," said Rosie Martinez, an LA County public health nurse. "No matter how irresponsible these executives have been, people rely on the substance abuse treatment services they receive at Tarzana Treatment Center."

"I'm a nurse and a County employee, and I want to see that every tax dollar goes where it's supposed to go--in this case, to help people recover from substance abuse."

Akbar Chatman, an LA County substance abuse counselor, notes the reports of self-dealing at Tarzana Treatment Center come at a time when substance abuse budgets are stretched thin, and local drug treatment centers are closing due to lack of funds.

"It's a tragedy," he says. "All those extra costs could be used to really help people."
