LA City professionals are working to mitigate the impact of planned layoffs. In meetings with the City on Tuesday, June 15, bargaining team members reduced the number of MOU 8 & 17 members slated for layoff from 37 to 16.
“Members of the bargaining teams demanded an updated list of the layoffs,” bargaining team members Gus Malkoun and Fred Burnett wrote in an email sent on Wednesday night. “In updating the list, the number got smaller and smaller.”
- Transportation and General Services Departments eliminated layoffs planned for their departments.
- Building & Safety and ITA reduced their layoff numbers.
The reductions were accomplished in various ways, including by finding other positions members could fill; and moving general-funded positions into special funded ones.
City Moves Ahead on Layoffs
On Thursday, June 17, the city sent layoff notices to 16 employees in MOU 8 & 17, along approximately 10 other SEIU 721 members:
Building & Safety
1 Structural Engineer (MOU 17)
10 Structural Engineering Associates (MOU 8)
ITA
3 Telecommunications Planners
2 Communications Engineering Associates
SEIU has setup a hotline for information regarding layoffs: 213-251-3722. Anyone who receives a layoff notice can call the hotline to get help and up-to-date information.

Bargaining Teams Demand Details on Furlough Plan
Currently the City’s plan is to furlough all employees even partially-funded by the general fund for 26 days in fiscal year 2010-2011, or one day per pay-period. This is a 10% cut in the services we provide residents, as well as our pay.
SEIU 721 bargaining team members has requested furlough lists, but the city has not provided them. We also continue to work with the Coalition of LA City unions and supporters to eliminate the service cuts and economic harm that come with layoffs and furloughs.
If you have any questions about bargaining, please call the SEIU hotline or talk to one of the MOU 8 & 17 bargaining team members.
