SEIU Members Vow to Challenge Riverside Board of Supervisors’ Two-Tier Retirement Proposal

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors took a page straight out of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s playbook on April 4 to vote in support of a proposal that implements a two-tier retirement system for new hires.

day’s vote cuts workers out of the conversation and fails to achie
ve immediate savings to solve the deficit. In fact this isn’t about saving money, as the impact of the proposed cuts to new hires’ retirement won’t be seen for
decades. What this is really about is an attack on all workers’ rights.

– Norma Ramirez, Respiratory Care Supervisor, Riverside County Regional Medical Center (RCRMC)
County Supervisors chose to ignore the voice of workers when it came to ensuring a secure retirement for new and current County employees. The proposal passed 5 to 0 in favor of creating a two-tier pension system even though, by the County’s own admission, there will be minimal savings for almost ten years.
Many questions remain regarding the legality of the Supervisors’ vote. SEIU 721 members will diligently study the impact of Monday’s decision.
More than ever, members need to stay involved and updated.

  1. This is getting ridicules, SEIU negotiated for step increases, over the last two years I haven’t seen one. I have lost 24 days of pay last year due to furloughs, now you want to take my retirement and mess with it. I can’t afford to strike but I will lay it all on the line if the union will do the same. Everyone wants to balance a budget but no one looks at how this budget became unbalanced in the first place. I know I am just one person but when are we going to fight back instead of just conceding every year. Lay us all off and see how they afford unemployment and hiring new people which should be funny since they supposedly can’t afford to hire. See how the budget improves when our money is no longer being spent. We keep this county running, we buy here, live here, work here. I want a union that is going to take a stand not just take it.
