Civil Litigants Will Hire Own Court Reporters, Creating 'Two-tier System'

Under new rules taking effect in Los Angeles County courthouses, civil litigants will be required to hire their own court reporters if they want an accurate transcript of court proceedings.

The result, as Court Reporter and SEIU 721 member Arnella Sims says in the video below, which aired on Fox 11 News, will be "a two-tier system: those who can afford to pay the extra cost of litigation and those who cannot."

I just don't understand why the union didn't try to save court reporters' jobs! We basically got thrown under the bus without any sort of fight and have no recourse!

A legal system without court reporters is a judicial failure.
