Contested Race for the Board of Supervisors Heats Up with Key Worker Announcement

LOS ANGELES, DEC. 12, 2007 – Nurses, firefighters, librarians, homecare workers, probation officers and other public service providers in Los Angeles County announced their endorsement of Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas for Supervisor in the county’s Second District.

“From the fires that raged across Los Angeles to the health crisis that has left thousands of families without health care, we are reminded how important a strong and responsive County Board of Supervisors is to the health and safety of residents,” said Dave Gillotte, president of Firefighters Local 1014. “In this crucial election, county public service providers will endorse the candidate who best stands for improving the lives of working families and that’s Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas.”

Workers representing more than 100,000 union members announced the endorsement Wednesday morning at an Inglewood fire station.

“Mark Ridley-Thomas is the best candidate for the Second District and he is a refreshing voice, accountable to the people with broad policy experience,” said Annelle Grajeda, president of SEIU Local 721. “With Mark Ridley Thomas, it’s a new day. We will partner with Mark Ridley-Thomas so that every member of this community has access to health care.”

Registered Nurse and Second District resident Ursula Epps spoke of the need to strengthen the county health-care system.

“The county hospitals truly are the backbone of our health care system and we need a Supervisor who understands how critical these services are to the community,” said Epps, a SEIU Local 721 member. “Supervisor is a big job and a big responsibility in a big county. We are confident Mark Ridley-Thomas has the experience to lead like no one else.”

Union members representing thousands of public service workers endorsed Mark Ridley-Thomas to replace Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite-Burke, who retires next year. The election is June 3.
