SEIU 721 Member, Daphne Teoh Awarded 2008 Asian Pacific Islander Leadership Award

Daphne-teoh-api-award.pngIn celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Assembly member Mike Eng, a true friend of organized labor, who represents the 49th Assembly district, honored outstanding community leaders who represent individuals in the Asian American community on May 23rd at the Monterey Park Services Clubhouse, Monterey Park.  The individuals were honored for their significant leadership and contributions made in the following areas: Art, Culture, Music/Entertainment, Community Activism, Education, Youth, Veterans, and Senior Citizens Services.
One of our very own SEIU Local 721 member, Daphne Teoh, received the Community Activism award.  Dr. Teoh is a first generation immigrant from Malaysia, who arrived in the United States in 1983, and eventually earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.  She currently works for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Dr. Teoh provides mental health and counseling services to the mentally ill men and women at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility for the past 11 years.  
Daphne Teoh was also awarded a Certificate of Recognition from Gloria Romero, the Senate Majority Leader of the 24th District.   She was similarly recognized by the Mayors of the Cities of Monterey Park and Rosemead.
Dr. Teoh is a dedicated community activist and Union leader. She is the Chair of SEIU Local 721 Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, and invites you to join her in advancing the goals of the Caucus.  Dr. Teoh also is an active member of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, and serves as a SEIU Local 721 delegate to the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.  She is the vice-chair of Bargaining Unit 341, involved in contract negotiations for the past two cycles in 2003 and 2006.  
Dr. Teoh obtained a grant of $200,000 for CEU reimbursement to LA County Health Science Professionals of Bargaining Units 341 and 342.  She co-authored a curriculum to train union members and management to work harmoniously together to achieve the common of goal of delivery quality services to the community.
