At our last bargaining session in May, our bargaining team proposed
that Student Worker County employees receive the same employee rights
and fringe benefits as all other temporary employees in Los Angeles
County. Without justification, the County rejected this proposal.
They continue to discriminate against student workers for going to
school, since the majority of us work 40+ hours per week and do the
exact same work as permanent employees – work that is often paid two to
five times the amount a student worker is paid.
The County has rejected:
“Coordinated bargaining,” which would allow Student Workers to negotiate contract alongside permanent county employees.
Proposals to be included in our Union’s Barganining Policy Committee,
Our right to elect worksite leaders, denied any form of new employee orientation,
A formal process to arbitrate contract violations.
Our proposal that Student Workers receive yearly Performance
Evaluations (PE) to allow students to use their experience with the
County to make them competitive in applying for permanent positions in
the County.
PEs are given additional points when scoring an applications. Because
many student workers are not given performance evaluations, they are
placed in lower bands as though they have never worked for the County.
The result is these employees remain in the Student Worker position for
many years. In bad faith, the County flat out rejected the proposal,
saying they have no interest in changing the status quo.
County management acts like bullies. Their intention is to isolate
student workers as second class employees who can be used as cheap
labor with no benefits and no real rights.
We are ramping up the campaign with worksite protests starting on June
25, Board visits, and a press conference. Your support and
participation is crucial to winning student worker equality! Get
involved!
