Traffic Troubles Don't Leave Members Tongue-Tied

Nearly 700 Fill Out Online Commuter Survey

From the Ventura beaches to the Coachella Valley SEIU 721 members are fed up with tangled traffic. Nearly 700 members shared their experiences through an online survey. "I feel like I'm rushing to get home to spend the little time left of the day," said one LA County member with young children.

The shortest reported commute? 1/2 mile. The longest: 182 miles.  But many in between are fuming over the price of gas, and the hassle of hours stuck in traffic.

LA County members meet to save money, fight pollution
The SEIU 721 contract calls for commuter solutions to save members money, increase the use of public transportation, and reduce pollution. LA County members are turning frustration to action — and blazing a trail for other members to follow:

Setting priorities: More than 50 people met on July 15 to share their experiences
Meeting with management to promote traffic-busting ideas through the SEIU 721 contract
Sending a petition to LA County leaders to win support for alternative and flexible work schedules, effective transfer policies so people can work closer to their homes, transit subsidies, and telecommuting

Many members were enthusiastic about alternate work schedules meant to cut the number of cars on the road. "I worked a 4-40 schedule for my first employer, and it reduced gas used, carbon and other pollutants and wear and tear on my car by 20%," said one LA City member. "That's a big number!" Riverside, Ventura, and L.A. County members are in talks with management over alternate schedules.

Steps to end our traffic nightmare:

Meet other members: Watch for commuting meetings in your area or talk to your steward or worksite organizer to get one started at your worksite
Take action: File a petition to leaders or meet with management to push for solutions that will make a difference. Download the L.A. County commuter petition (pdf) or look at the online commuter petition to learn more
