SEIU Members to Unite in D.C. This Weekend for Member Political Action Conference (MPAC)
Starting Sunday, close to 2,000 SEIU
members will come together
in Washington, DC to lay the groundwork for electing a pro-worker president in 2008. SEIU Local 721 will be sending over 40 member leaders to participate in the conference. Among them, Patricia Whitehead and Shawna Atchison, both Ventura County workers who recently won language in their contract that allows for paid union time.

Over dinner on Sunday, the eight members who participated in the
Walk a Day in My Shoes
shadow program will discuss their personal experiences with the candidates.

Throughout the day on Monday, members will meet with and hear from five major presidential candidates. Each candidate will be introduced by the member who they shadowed on the job. Also on Monday, at 10 a.m., poet, playwright, and performer.

On Tuesday, MPAC participants will head to the Hill to talk to their members of Congress about a wide range of important issues including nurse staffing, funding for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), fair compensation for homecare workers, and the war in Iraq.
