LOS ANGELES – State Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas won the first step toward becoming the next Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor for the 2nd District after winning the most votes in the June 3 primary.
SEIU 721 members contributed $1.75 million and 5,000 volunteer hours to Ridley Thomas’ campaign over the last six months. The union, with 80,000 members who work as public service providers throughout Southern California, dedicated itself to electing Ridley-Thomas for his deep commitment to the district and his track record on child care, health care, youth opportunity, police accountability and community engagement.
Ridley-Thomas entered the election with much less name recognition than his primary opponent, Bernard Parks. In fact even the day before the election Parks touted a 30 point lead on his campaign website. As the top vote getter, Ridley-Thomas’ is now well-positioned to win in the November general election.
The following can be attributed to Annelle Grajeda, president SEIU Local 721:
“There is a mandate for change in Los Angeles County and that will positively affect every resident in the county. Mark will be a leader who is open to the community and committed to improving services for people who desperately need quality health care, help for their families, and good jobs.
“Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas provides hope for the district and a plan to restore health services, promote programs for children and young adults, improve the environment, and expand affordable housing. He will work to improve the lives of county workers and the people we serve.”
SEIU is committed to working with Ridley Thomas, and all of our elected leaders, together with teachers, parents, neighbors, community leaders, to build a stronger California so we will pass on a better future to our children.”
