A message from Linda Dent, Chair of the SEIU 721 LA County Bargaining Policy Committee:

Bargaining for a new Los Angeles County contract is now under way.

County management delivered its first proposal to the Bargaining Policy Committee late last week. They proposed to freeze all contributions to health care at this year’s rate.

Here’s an informational flyer with the numbers on the health care proposal that you can download for your worksite. Download the update here.

Just since 2000 health care costs in California have doubled — that means if health insurance for you and your family cost $500 a month, now it costs $1,000. But wages haven’t kept up. Is anyone you know making double what they were just a few years ago? No way! On top of that, just in the last two years millions more have lost their employer-based health care nationwide and the number of people with no health insurance at all just keeps growing.

Congress is debating health care reform as we speak and it’s no wonder why. Unfortunately no one is immune to this problem that’s why it’s important to understand the facts.

We can also take the opportunity we have in sitting down with the county to Build a Better LA County by fighting for better working conditions and more efficient services that the county has resisted for years.
