Listen to Hospital Staff to Help Reopen King

John-Tanner_80x80.jpgby John Tanner, executive director, SEIU 721 More than one hundred people assembled outside the packed Board chambers at the Hall of Administration in Downtown Los Angeles Tuesday – the vast majority were there to support reopening King as a full service hospital. Inside it was standing room only. I was fortunate enough to address the Board to advocate for a seat at the table in the design of the new King. Here’s what I said: One of our top priorities is to help restore full medical care to South Los Angeles. We want to ensure that the highest quality medical care – from outpatient services, emergency and trauma care to regular checkups and neonatal care – is available to residents in the area. We believe the best and only way to ensure a quality health care system is if front-line workers – from nurses to doctors to nursing assistants to custodians – are involved in the design of the new King. A good first step is a partnership between the members of SEIU Local 721 and the county and hospital management. We propose using the model implemented across the Kaiser healthcare system, which has achieved the highest demonstrated and measurable quality outcomes in the industry. Our partners at Kaiser and SEIU are ready to work with us to undertake this effort. This is the kind of innovation that can be readily established in our county health care system. Our members want to be proud of the jobs they do and support wholeheartedly working with management to reopen a strong King Hospital. We have an historic opportunity to establish the best care anywhere at the new King and we stand ready to work with you to accomplish this vital goal.
