We’re One Nation, Let’s Act Like It

“One nation…” What do you think about when you hear those words?

They remind me of America’s highest ideals in the Pledge of Allegiance — “indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” But when I look around, I see people divided and angry. When I think about what has happened to our economy because of Wall Street greed, I’m angry too.

On 10-2-10, exactly one month before the Nov. 2 election, thousands of people will come together at One Nation Demand Change Day in Los Angeles and across the country. They are kicking off a campaign to reunite California and our communities. Actor Danny Glover and Grammy-winning musician Tom Morello will be there to help, along with SEIU members and community groups from across Southern California.

I’ve been talking to other SEIU 721 members about their choices on Nov. 2, and a lot of us are upset about the direction of our state. We work in public services, and we hear constant attacks on our retirement from people who want to downsize and privatize government. But we perform vital services, and we want to see more jobs, an end to foreclosures, and no more attacks on public employees as the problem. To me that’s what it comes down to.

10-2-10 is our chance to get the word out about our values. Click here to get the details.
