Social Workers Advance on Core Training and Policy Review

kids_playing_340x180.jpgSocial workers are part of three high level committees that the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office is convening with frontline workers, department leadership and top county management in order to achieve long-term improvements to child welfare in LA County.
The committee will provide reports as the process progresses. Please email us to get involved.
POLICY
Goal:
Evaluating policies and their relationship to discipline.
Progress So Far: Social workers will now have a say in how policy demands are written. For the first time, social workers will have a direct role in drafting policies.
Union Representatives:
Larry Golan (SCSW)
Mellonie Freeman (CSW)
Randy Gracia (CSW)
Dina Petruzzi-Sadredo (SCSW)
Hector Ruiz (CSW)
Steven Simon (SEIU Local 721)
TRAINING
Goal:
Redesign and develop new and needed trainings for social workers at every level.
Progress So Far: The core academy training has been revised to include 17 field days — an increase from five — each with a set curriculum; the creation of a training unit with protected caseloads in two pilot offices; and training staff (CSAs) embedded in each office to help uniformly train new social workers on field days. The new program launched Dec. 6.
Union Representatives:
Tony Bravo (SCSW)
Blanca Gomez (CSW)
Aruna Patel (CSW)
Michael Aguilera (CSW)
Lupe Palma (SEIU Local 721)
OVER 60s AND ER REDESIGN
Goal:
Develop a standard business process for responding to emergency referrals (both under and over 60 days). This should include intake referrals, streamlining work, appropriate staffing and necessary resources.
Progress So Far: Three recommendations awaiting implementation —
1. Shortening the investigative narrative.
2. Reducing the number of collateral contacts.
3. Common sense changes to the FCI.
Union Representatives:
Rachel Ruiz (SCSW)
Mike Ross (SCSW)
Adrian Gonzalez (SCSW)
Mark White (CSW)
Michael Green (SEIU Local 721)
