LAC+USC Medical Center Is Cleaner and Now Greener … a New Grant Makes Custodians’ Project a Reality

Custodians and managers at LAC+USC Medical Center have been working together through an innovative partnership to build a modern Environmental Services (EVS) Dept. that meets the needs of our hospital and our patients.
As part of our work together, we have been awarded grant funding through the Healthcare Career Advancement Project (HCAP), to support training EVS staff in ‘greening’ our work. That means using practices and substances that are safer for employees, patients and the earth. These trainings will in turn support three more projects that we will identify and implement in order to lead to a measurably ‘greener’ hospital.

“The class was very important. They taught us how to save time and money by thinking green and saving water and energy.”
-Danilo Barrera, Custodian, LAC+USC Medical Center
Custodians are already trained on how to best use chemicals in order to reduce hospital acquired infections.
Currently, all custodians are taking part in a training called ‘Seeing Green’ to learn the concepts and vocabulary related to how waste, energy, and water affect patients, workers and the community.
Future trainings will focus in greater details on various components improving our hospital, including water conservation, reduction of waste, energy conservation, communication and toxic chemicals and injury prevention.
