Census 2010: Ten Minutes to Help Keep Public Services in Southern California

Every 10 years the U.S. Constitution requires the federal government to conduct a count of all the inhabitants of the United States.
It’s especially important for SEIU 721 members because the federal government also uses census results to distribute $478 billion in federal funding to state and local governments.
This includes many areas SEIU workers serve, such as highway construction, unemployment insurance, children’s health insurance, mass transit and hundreds of other federal programs that all Americans benefit from.
Census information also helps determine where to build schools, roads, hospitals, child care centers, senior centers and other services that help our families.
Additionally, census results are used to apportion representation for federal and state legislatures.
The Census Bureau can only use its information for statistical purposes, such as for counting large groups. By statute, the Bureau cannot share personal information with any person, company, or government agency like the IRS or the FBI.
The Bureau will mail census forms in mid-March 2010 to all households. This year’s census form will take only about 10 minutes to complete.

The closer we can close the gap of who’s in and who’s out of the system, the better we can create a balanced budget that meets all of our needs.”
