Black History Through Film

This year for the first time in the almost 90 year history of the Oscars a film with an all black cast won Best Picture. Moonlight’s win signifies a change in not only the film industry but American culture and awareness. 2017 marked the first time an African American was nominated for Best Cinematography and the First African American Woman to be nominated for best Editing. While Hollywood and the Oscars have long been criticized for being #toowhite we are finally seeing film studios take note. In recent years we’ve seen more films with African American cast, directors, writers, producers and crew but more importantly we’ve seen films change the way African Americans are portrayed on screen.
