Seven Steps for Planning a Demonstration

1.    Have your rally, demonstration or picket at places that fit in with your issues or target – at the DPSS office, County Hall of Administration, a hospital, etc.  Choose a location that is:
            * Easy for people to get to
            * Large enough for a crowd (park, parking lot, etc.)
            * Visible, so other people will see you.
2.    Talk to your Local 721 Worksite Organizer about whether you must obtain a permit or follow certain rules about how far apart you have to walk, how big your signs can be, etc.  Remember, you have a constitutional right to assemble and speak out.  Don’t let your rights be violated.  Contact Local 721 if you have any questions or problems.
3.    Obtain a loudspeaker or bullhorn so that the crowd can hear your speakers.  Local 721 has them available for these events.
4.    Have the persons speaking where they can be seen: standing on some steps, a platform or a car.
5.    Have something fun to do – a march somewhere, a song to sing or make a symbolic presentation to dramatize your demand.
6.    Make lots of banners, signs and poster with your slogan or demands.  Have a sign making party – Ask your Worksite Organizer about obtaining materials.
7.    Make sure you talk with your Worksite Organizer about having photos taken of your action, publicity, etc.
AND REMEMBER!
Before you launch a work action such as a demo, make sure everyone understands the issue you are demonstrating over.  This is critical!  Unless everyone on the picket line knows why they are there, your work action will be less effective.
In all cases, demonstrations and work actions should be planned in conjunction with your Local 721 Worksite Organizer and other stewards.
