“This is great news,” said Joe Maturino, an environmental supervisor II with the City Bureau of Sanitation, Recycling. “Our voices will be heard in SEIU.”
Thousands of City professional employees who are currently represented by the Engineers & Architects Association (EAA) have been taking steps since summer 2008 to switch to SEIU 721 to have a stronger voice at work and unite with the 22,000 other City employees in the Coalition of LA City Unions, of which SEIU 721 is a member.
The group of 500 city engineers is the first of EAA’s six employee groups to join SEIU 721. A group of 1,500 City of Los Angeles professional employees will have the choice to vote for SEIU in a run-off election, to be scheduled at a later date.
“It’s been a long, hard fight to leave EAA, but the fight isn’t over,” Maturino continued. “We will continue to support our colleagues and we’ll do whatever we can to assist them in their efforts to also make the important switch to SEIU.”
