What Will Happen to California?

State Braces LA Times headline 240px.jpg

Governor Schwarzenegger wants to cut 20-25 percent of California's budget including programs like Healthy Families and CalWorks that fund thousands of positions and are a major source of county funding...

On top of that, he's talking about raiding billions more directly from city and county budgets, which means potential cuts to every single department.

What does the state budget problem mean for LA County?

It means hundreds of millions less and unknown devastating effects. With local declines in revenue the county already closed a $300-million hole by deleting budgeted, but vacant, positions and using funds from the federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. The Governor's proposal would add another $300 million deficit, plus millions more from state-funded programs, and put us back to square one.
