Over 10,000 working families in Ventura County now have affordable medical insurance for their children through a state program called “Healthy Families” but they could be losing that coverage very soon.
I know that through my job, I can help keep health care costs down for all us. When people have insurance they will go to their doctor for the flu and have their children vaccinated. This not only keeps the children healthy but it stops the spread of viruses such as H1N1 virus that spread throughout our community last month. When uninsured families turn to the public hospital’s Emergency Room for medical services this leads to bigger bills for those of us with insurance and increased costs to our county’s budget.
I am very concerned that so many programs and services for children and elderly are on the state’s budget chopping block. Children are our future and the elderly helped build this great state. Why are they being punished?
Sure Sacramento could cut “Healthy Families” but in addition to hurting the children it will cost all of us much more.

I too am concerned about loss of coverage for children. Here’s why: On November 30th, 2007, at approximately 7AM, I was traveling west bound on the #20 bus down Wilshire Blvd. An unkept male passenger, seated in the middle of the bus, was coughing non-stop and spitting up copious amounts of blood-tinged sputum into a cup. Wiping his mouth with his dirty hand each time he coughed, he touched all the handholds the rest of us used. Half of the approximately 45 passengers on this particular bus were junior high school students on their way to John Burroughs Middle School… Read more »
