Red Cross Workers Announce Strike, Drawing Attention to Donor Safety

Red-Cross-Press-Conf_article_595x180.jpgTherese Mendoza, RN, is joined by Glendale Unified School Board member Nayiri Nahabedian, and Red Cross employees: Sylvia Dominguez-Bailey, Gloria Garcia, LVN, Maggie Suan, Collection Technician at a press conference at the Red Cross in Glendale.  She said: “We are here for three things: Donor safety, teen safety and affordable healthcare for families.”
Red Cross workers focused media attention on safety measures that would help protect blood donors that the Red Cross has so far refused at a press conference May 19 in Glendale.
The night before Sylvia Dominguez-Bailey met with the Lakewood High School PTA, home of one of the country’s largest high school blood drives, to shed light on the higher rate of medical complications among young donors and measures that could be taken to keep teenagers safer.
The PTA president called on the Red Cross to provide equipment and personnel to ensure safety at their upcoming blood drive.
Nayiri Nahabedian, Glendale School Board told the press: “When a 16 or 17-year-old donates blood they are 14 times more likely to have medical complications than their elders.
“The Red Cross does wonderful work and we must call on them to continue that work with the correct safety measures in place.”
More than 1,000 Red Cross worker in seven cities have approved a strike. In LA, we will give the Red Cross a 10-day notification of strike within in the next couple of days, but will seek to return to negotiations in the intervening days in hopes of reaching a fair agreement
