Schwarzenegger
says that this imposed tax on public employees will raise revenues for
the State by $1.2 billion over the next 18 months. How much would be
gained by a 10% tax on the gross income of the other 30 million
Californians? Perhaps it would be enough to erase the budget shortfall
and to fully fund education of public school students in our great
state?
If the Democrats who are in the majority in the
Assembly and the State Senate were to suggest a 10% tax on gross income
of all Californians, the Republicans in the legislature would raise the
cry of “class warfare.” It seems that the term class warfare does not
apply to sticking it to the poor. It only has meaning if the well off
are asked to help share the extra burden on society when the economy
has “gone south.”
If only 10 million of our 30 million state
residents are income producing, imposing such a tax on their gross
income would produce new state revenues of approximately 50 billion
dollars or enough to wipe out the deficit and to fully fund education
from pre-school through university in California. If it is such a good
idea to tax State workers on 10% of their gross income, why not tax all
of us the same? If Arnold did so, he could fully fund teachers, police
officers, firefighters and have money left over to improve our streets,
highways and rail transit. What do you say Mr. Governator?
