American Red Cross workers from District II outside the Pomona district office on June 2.
American Red Cross workers went on strike across Southern California — and the nation — on June 2. We are seeking a fair contract that protects our families and donor safety. Click here to see more photos from the strike lines outside Red Cross’s Pomona district office.
U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, a former Red Cross board member, joined medical workers at a rally in front of the Red Cross’s Pomona district office. Red Cross workers spoke to reporters from KABC-7, KCBS-2, Univision-34, La Opinion and local newspapers and radio.
Here are some voices from the strike line:
“The people who draw blood and test blood know best how to make sure America’s blood supply is safe. That’s why we’re putting our jobs on the line – to ensure that working conditions at Red Cross promote donor safety, and reduce blood safety errors on the job.” – Therese Mendoza, RN
“I love my job and the critical work we do supplying blood to trauma centers and hospitals. We can make things better at the Red Cross, but for no logical or major financial reason they have refused.” – Monica Marquez, collections technician
“When we’re understaffed, Red Cross wants the quantity but they don’t want the quality. That’s why we’re here.” – Andrea Avila, collections technician
“As a Red Cross board member, I learned that it is the Red Cross workers who make this organization happen. You are the ones making sure the blood supply is there, and it’s safe.” – U.S. Rep. Judy Chu
