Imagining a Better Future for All Union Members

We’re in a new economic reality. Retirement security, wages, health benefits and even our jobs are at risk for public employees like us. In these tough economic times we need public employees to work together to convince elected officials not to make additional cuts at the expense of public employees.

As president and vice president we believe that if more union members were involved in our organization we would be more effective in preserving critical public services. In that spirit we are convening a three-day meeting to help plan the future of our union.

Due to finances we cannot invite every union member, but we labored to select members that represent all corners of our union – different job classifications, years of services, backgrounds, regions and more.

We are in a unique time, but by thinking strategically and imagining a better future for our families, ourselves and the counties and municipalities for which we work we can ensure the best outcome possible.

While about 80 percent of union members don’t participate in our union at all, in a recent poll of our membership about three quarters of union members agree that we could be more effective if more people participated. The question is how to do that.

The event is called “Imagine 721” and will take place in Riverside starting July 30. The goal is to create a plan to engage more public employees, SEIU 721 union members, in our union.

It won’t be easy, but if we are successful we can improve the quality of life here and help rebuild California.

Sincerely,
