LA Street Crews Say: “LA City is in Such Disrepair”

SEIU 721 members in the LA City Street Services Division are taking aim at the furloughs and budget cuts that have diminished the quality of life in Los Angeles.

Workers repave hundreds of miles of roads and highways each year. They repair and smooth raised sidewalks to prevent dangerous falls. Street services prevent damage to vehicles by maintaining the city’s roads and resurfacing potholes.

These core services are at risk as the LA City Council balances the budget by cutting services and furloughing workers in the Street Services Bureau and the Urban Forestry Division.

Voices from Street Services

“Our goal is to repave about 235 miles of roads from the Harbor to the 101 Freeway all the way down to the Valley, but furloughs and short staffing have made this nearly impossible.”
Lawrence Lacour, Heavy Duty Truck Operator

“We’re asking LA City leadership to be a better steward of the city budget so we can safeguard street services and keep our city from falling in disrepair.”
Rudy Sanchez, Motor Sweeper Operator

“As a single father, furloughs have hit my family hard. We want to get back to work.”   Ed Singer, Heavy Duty Truck Operator
