Spending Is Up, But Services Are Down at Ventura County Superior Court

SEIU 721 members and staff met with Ventura Superior Court to discuss the operating budget for 2010-11 and the status of the furloughs. SEIU was seeking to end furloughs and restore court operations based on new funding from the state. SEIU 721 members helped win the funding for courts statewide through a series of actions.

At the meeting, Ventura Court representatives stated they needed to continue the mandatory time off to cover $4.5 million in increased spending.

The 2010-11 Ventura Superior Court budget shows an additional $4.5 million in expenses over their last fiscal year.  The courts have chosen to increase its budget by as much as 500% for items such as renovations, office equipment, consultants and travel.  When asked about the budget increases, the court could not provide answers but has said they would try to provide full details at a later date.

SEIU 721’s Plan: Hold the Line on Spending, Restore Services and End Furloughs

SEIU 721 members have proposed that the courts maintain their spending at 2009-10 levels they would have a balanced budget and court employees could end furlough days in December.  Ending the furloughs would increase services to the public at a time when the public needs more access not less to court services.
