SEIU Local 721 Member Cecilia Hernandez-Garcia Wins Seat on VCERA Board

Congratulations to SEIU members on the election of their member-endorsed candidate for the Ventura County Employees’ Retirement Association (VCERA) pension board, Cecilia Hernandez-Garcia.  Cecilia is an SEIU 721 leader and former bargaining team member.

She is a welcome addition to the board and is now the only woman and person of color on the board. Diversity and representation matter. She joins our other recently elected SEIU member trustee, Jordan Roberts.

That’s two SEIU-endorsed candidates elected to VCERA in less than 12 months

Cecilia’s first meeting as a VCERA trustee was on her birthday, Monday, July 27th.  At that meeting trustees voted to bring the review of disability retirement applications back under the authority of the VCERA Board where it belongs instead of having them go  to County Risk Management – a clear conflict of interests.  When we vote together, we win!  Congratulations to Cecilia, and happy birthday too!

VCERA is the pension fund for Ventura County, Ventura Superior Court and Ventura Regional Sanitation District employees.  Its nine-person board oversees applications for disability retirement and governs more than $5.5 Billion of workers’ retirement funds.
