Have you – or someone you know in the Legal Processing Unit (BU 860) of the LA Superior Court – had bereavement leave benefits NOT be honored? If so, please contact Jermaine Brightwell of SEIU 721 at (213) 453-7604 or jermaine.brightwell@seiu721.org.
Our Union, SEIU 721, is demanding that the Court recognize the Fringe Benefits specified in our Union contract – and this includes bereavement leave. We want to know who at the Court has been affected – in this case, by having bereavement leave benefits NOT be honored.
Remember: Our Union negotiates hard for all parts of our contract, which includes Fringe Benefits. Specifically, Article 39 in our Legal Professional Unit (LPU) contract states:
“The Parties agree that the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding regarding Fringe Benefits, Mileage and Retirement between the County of Los Angeles and SEIU, Local 721, AFL-CIO, in effect during the term of this Agreement will apply to the employees in the Unit so long as those benefits are available to the Court.”
The Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, that is referred to above – and which is in effect now – is our most recently negotiated 2025 MOU. All of the provisions apply, but please note two important exceptions to our Fringe Benefits at the Court:
- Holidays are governed by Code of Civil Procedure Section 135 and Government Code Section 6700.
- Vacations may also not apply since the Court includes a separate Vacations article in our MOU.
However, bereavement leave IS covered in the Fringe Benefits portion of our MOU. It’s part of our contract … and that’s a fact.
So, we want to know if you – or someone you know in the Legal Processing Unit of the LA Superior Court – had bereavement leave benefits NOT be honored. If this is the case, please contact Jermaine Brightwell of SEIU 721 at (213) 453-7604 or jermaine.brightwell@seiu721.org.
We look forward to hearing from everyone. Together, we win!
