Helping Support Those Who Have Served Us

Perry-Morefield-Carol-Consoli-Lorenzo-Chavez-_TriCounty-Stewards_240x160.jpgOn July 14 at the Tri-County Stewards meeting, SEIU members/veterans Lorenzo Chavez and Carolyn Consoli spoke about Ventura County’s 17th Annual “Stand Down” event. Every year thousands of veterans become homeless or at risk of homelessness for a variety of reasons. “Stand Down” has provided support and services for more than 3,500 veterans and their families in Ventura County. Similar events are also held throughout Southern California for veterans. After answering questions from other stewards, one member was moved to suggest that they take a donation that night and ask other members to help volunteer at the event. Everyone in the room donated.

At the “Stand Down” event vital services and information are made available to the veterans and their family such as medical and vision (and glasses) screenings, legal and employment assistance, information on VA benefits and social services and more. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, serving meals, distributing clothing and comfort kits.
