Statement from David Green on the Murder of Alex Pretti

In times of great injustice, labor leaders must be prepared to speak out and uphold the traditions of our movement

Here’s the truth: Alex Pretti was murdered in a campaign of racial and ethnic terror ordered by the White House. Pretti, a former research scientist, nurse for veterans, and a union sibling, was, by all accounts, a good man who deeply cared for and served his community. He was killed while trying to protect a woman being attacked by government agents implementing the White House’s immoral and unlawful orders.

SEIU Local 721 members demand justice for Pretti, and we are outraged by the federal government’s lies slandering him. We vow to honor his memory and that of Renee Nicole Good by continuing to fight the state terror that took their lives.

This campaign has many victims — too many who have died and thousands who have been unjustly questioneddetained, imprisoned, or exiled. We now live in a country where government agents apprehend and attack people for their skin color, their accents, their work, their language, and their place of birth. Critics of this terror face retaliation. The scale of the injustice demands that people of conscience act with bravery and boldness.

This wave of state terror will not end until those who have been entrusted to lead our governments, institutions, and social movements speak out and work to hold those responsible accountable with whatever power they have. As an elected labor leader, I pledge to fight for justice, and I call on all SEIU 721 members to continue speaking out with me against the White House’s brutal attacks on our communities.

In solidarity,

David Green
SEIU 721 President
