Last week, we alerted you about our fight against the Chief Administrative Officer’s (CAO) mass layoff threat.
We’re proud to announce that the local GRT initiative has been pulled off the November ballot due to SEIU 721 President David Green’s unwavering leadership.
President Green and our labor partners led the victorious efforts to stop the GRT’s repeal. We made it very clear that Big Business cannot and will not evade paying their fair share by shifting the burden on to our frontline workers.
We assured you that would we lead the fight against any and every layoff threat stemming from LA’s Big Business lobby’s attempt to repeal the gross receipts tax (GRT), and that’s exactly we what did.
As we’ve said before, a GRT repeal would have a detrimental impact on city services. If the GRT was approved by voters, the city’s General Fund would lose an estimated $860 million on average for the first five years starting in fiscal year 2027-28. The average annual loss would increase every year.
In short, the asteroid-like impact to the General Fund would decimate the city’s ability to deliver vital city services.
Today we can claim victory, but we cannot rest on our laurels. Our fight against Big Business and super rich anti-union interests will continue. Please stand ready to fight back and join our Committee On Political Education (COPE) today.
When we fight, we win.
