Red Cross to KLOS: Let Us Help You Collect Blood Safely

Red Cross Workers UnitedPopular classic rock radio station KLOS 95.5 FM will host its annual blood drive with the American Red Cross starting July 27.

The “Let It Bleed” themed blood drive is one of the region’s most successful and for 30 years the Southern California mobile blood drive and blood collection center staff have helped make it a success.

Collecting blood is serious business, but Red Cross management is not listening to staff when it comes to making the collection process as safe as possible. KLOS listeners have the right to know the truth about national practices and policies that can put donors at risk and endanger the blood supply.

We’re asking radio station management to meet with us to hear our concerns and learn about alternative blood collection sites until our safety concerns are addressed. You can help:

Call KLOS Program Director
Bob Buchmann at 310-840-4873

Tell him:

Red Cross workers provide a critical function  – they supply blood to trauma centers and hospitals.

The people who draw blood and test blood know best how to make sure America’s blood supply is safe. That’s why they want to ensure working conditions at Red Cross promote donor safety, and reduce blood safety errors on the job.

There is a clear link between bad American Red Cross labor policies and blood safety compliance failures. This includes:

  • understaffing blood drives,
  • keeping blood drives open despite high heat in high school gyms
  • and eliminating the most experienced licensed medical personnel, creating a low-morale, high-turnover work environment.

Ask him to meet with Red Cross and let them talk about safety concerns on the air.
