Agricultural workers of all ethnicities and nationalities have historically contributed economically, socially and culturally to this great country. In the Tri-County region it is one of the top industries and many SEIU 721 members have families that work or have worked in the industry. Because of these ties, SEIU 721 became an early sponsor of the Santa Paula Farm Worker Monument. This is the first monument in the nation to honor farm workers and will be dedicated on Aug. 15.
“My mother Maria Elena Aguirre worked in a lemon packing house for 33 years. Her
dedication and hard work earned her respect and admiration. I am inspired by her example. Despite working hard labor with low wages she was thrifty and able to provide for her family without depending on public assistance. She took pride in earning her living and contributing to the United States economy. She is representative of the millions of immigrants that came to America for a better life for their families. My hero is my mother and I’m proud that my union is sponsoring this memorial.” Cecilia Hernandez-Garcia, Fiscal Assistant III, Ventura County
“My father was one of the earliest supporters of Cesar Chavez in the Santa Maria Valley. His name was Clemente L. Ruiz. He was a proud member of La Causa and very involved with the marches in this valley. He was one of the key helpers of the group that supported the marchers putting together the meals for the marchers. He passed away last December and I’m pleased that my union is helping to honor him and all the other farm laborers.” Maria Vargas, Social Service Worker, Santa Barbara County
The memorial honors all agricultural workers including farm laborers, farmers, packing house workers and truck drivers.
The public ceremony for dedicating the memorial will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Aug. 15, 2010 in Santa Paula. Click the flyer link for full details of the monument dedication. Farmworker Memorial Flyer.pdf
