STATEMENT FOR: Mon. July 30., 2018 – President Bob Schoonover “SEIU Local 721 Mourns the Loss of Traffic Officer Gregory Park”

Gregory Park

“SEIU Local 721 mourns the loss of veteran, traffic officer and our union brother Gregory Park, who was killed while serving the public. We share the grief of his family and coworkers in this time of unexpected sorrow.

“Park was a dedicated public servant of more than 13 years. As a traffic officer for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, he braved the dangers of LA traffic to help keep things moving and allow all of us to make it home to our families. It was in this service that Park lost his life, as a nearby collision struck him while he was out of his vehicle during a peak traffic hour.

“Park, like so many of his SEIU Local 721 brothers and sisters, did the necessary, hazardous work that keeps Los Angeles moving. Whether it’s performing traffic control on the most congested streets in the nation or enforcing peak hour restrictions to help Angelenos with their commutes to and from work, traffic officers give the city all they can, and this past Friday, Officer Park gave too much. His tragic death is a sad reminder of the day-to-day dangers that he and his colleagues face ‘behind the scenes’ to make all of our lives easier.

“Park is survived by his sister, brother, mother and father. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to them and all who loved him. He will be missed by the members of SEIU Local 721. We will continue to do all that we can to fight for the safety of Los Angeles workers and prevent another tragedy like this from happening.”
