Statement for Mon., May 15, 2023 — SEIU 721 on WGA Strike: ‘We Are in Strong Solidarity and We Will Not Cross Any Picket Lines’

LOS ANGELES – SEIU 721 President David Green released the following statement regarding the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike currently taking place.

“SEIU 721 proudly supports the WGA strike. We are in strong solidarity and we will not cross any picket lines. This is about union solidarity across industries. SEIU 721 – like Unite HERE and the Teamsters, among others – will honor the WGA’s picket lines.

“We at SEIU 721 know it isn’t an easy decision to go on strike. Our own union faced this decision in the early 1990s with rolling strikes in LA County. We faced it again nearly two years ago when LA County nurses literally came within hours of going on strike. And we may face it again very soon in the City of Los Angeles, with our workforce voting now on whether to go on an Unfair Labor Practice strike.

“We understand how it feels and what it takes. As such, our respect for the WGA’s membership has only grown. They’re setting an incredible example for the labor movement everywhere – and at a time when unions are undergoing a renaissance throughout our nation, even internationally. Unions are hot and so is our support for the WGA.”
