Update on Saving Ventura’s Wright Library: Support from Ray Bradbury and the New York Times

More than 200 library supporters attended the inaugural Wright Library Author Series with Ray Bradbury to help save the HP Wright Library on June 20.  The library was targeted for closure but was given a loan by the City of Ventura and a reprieve through March 2010 by the County of Ventura. Supporters of the library including many SEIU 721 members are hoping to raise $280,000 and have scheduled several events in the coming months.

The New York Times interviewed author Ray Bradbury about his support of local libraries focusing on the event for Wright Library and the article ran on the front page the day of the event.  In the article, Mr. Bradbury credits public local libraries for his “formal education.”  Although, he is turning 89 in August he still travels throughout California to help libraries keep their doors open.
