After Years of Service, Riverside County Workers Seek a Secure Retirement

This year, Riverside County’s old Pension Advisory Review Committee (PARC), which reports to the Executive Office and CEO, advocated to increase employee contribution levels. Even though employees vested in the system cannot lose their rate, the items that can change are:

• The amount workers contribute. Currently, the employer pays the employees
share after the employee has worked 5 years for the county.

• A ballot initiative could:

•  Change the percent workers receive in retirement.
•  Two-tier employee retirement for new hires.
•  Abolish the current system in favor of a 401 (k).

SEIU 721 is participating in a new Riverside County Pension Reform Advisory Committee (PRAC) that will report to the supervisors to shed light on the realities of retirement. The bargaining team is committed to defending workers’ rights to a secure retirement, but they can’t do it alone. They need member support.

The bargaining team is working to ensure the right to a secure retirement, as well as ending furloughs and achieving a fairness agreement.
