Member Leadership Development Courses and Training Opportunities

Here is an overview of the courses and training opportunities offered through the SEIU 721 Member Leadership Development program.
NOTE (4/1/2015) : For trainings in LA, due to bargaining, any steward from Los Angeles County will not be released during County time to attend training.

New Steward Orientation – Provides new stewards with an understanding of what their roles and responsibilities are as worksite leaders. Members also gain knowledge of SEIU 721 history and structure.

Grievance Handling Training – Member leaders gain skills on how to analyze problems and determine grievances’ merit. Member leaders also learn the steps and skills involved in the investigation and resolution of grievances.

Labor Management Training – Leaders gain skills on how to manage their labor/management meeting. Leaders also learn how to evaluate and screen problems to determine which ones are appropriate topics for Labor/Management resolution.

Organizational Leave Training – Provides members with basic knowledge of Family Medical Leave Act guidelines and how to determine when and how to use it. We also cover Pregnancy Leave, Return to Work, and Employee Assistance Program.

Note: Stewards must have completed the above trainings in order to attend the trainings listed below.


Intermediate Training Courses
Member Organizing – Member Leaders will understand the steps to organize their workplace and gain skills to reach out to the union membership and activate their co-workers.
Building our Political Power – Member Leaders will understand how politics impact our jobs and communities and learn the importance of building political power. The training is designed for stewards who will be actively recruiting for COPE.
Inter/Intrapersonal Skills – Member Leaders gain knowledge on how to build relationships in their workplace and how to deal with difficult people. This class is designed to develop our steward and non-steward leaders for advancement in any area of the Union activism.
Advanced Training Courses:
Advanced Grievance Handling – Member Leaders gain knowledge on advanced level grievance procedures such as arbitration, Skelly hearings, and discrimination. (Stewards must have handled grievances prior to attending training and must have 1 year of experience.)
Building our Political Power (Running a Campaign) – Member Leaders learn the fundamentals of running for office and how to develop a strategy to win. This course is offered for a select group of leaders/stewards.
Workers Compensation Training – Member Leaders gain an understanding of the guidelines for workers compensation and how to build a case. This course is conducted by the Law Offices of Victor Manrique.
