Inglewood: Budget Deficit Shouldn’t Be Reason to Cut Services

With the City of Inglewood facing a deep budget deficit, Inglewood city workers spoke out at City Council on September 14 for transparency and a plan to preserve city services.

The budget is due Oct. 1, but the city has not revealed how it will close an estimated $16 million gap.

Talai-Smith_Inglewood_Administrative-Assistant.jpg“We need to be looking at long-term goals, not just quick fixes,” said Talai Smith, Senior Administrative Aide and Inglewood Chapter President. “There needs to be more transparent oversight of our budget from now on. We need to know: Who is going to be in charge?”

City workers will hold a general membership meeting on Tuesday, September 21, to answer questions and address members’ concerns about the budget.

Leadership Test for Inglewood City Council

The City Council faced tough questioning from community members about the decision to hire a city administrator for $25,000 a month.

City residents recently elected a new Mayor, Danny Tabor, endorsed by SEIU 721 members.

The city administrator responded to criticism: “I understand why the highest paid individual of any entity is a lightning rod in difficult times.”

  1. THE CITY OF INGLEWOOD IS READY FOR A CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP. THE CURRENT LEADERS HAVE BEEN IN OFFICE FAR TOO LONG AND IT IS MOST ALARMING THAT THE CITY OFFICIALS DO NOT HAVE THE CITY BEST INTEREST AT HEART. I AM A RESIDENT OF INGLEWOOD IN THE 4TH DISTRICT. A DISTRICT WHICH IS LARGELY IGNORED. OF SIGNIFICANT IMPORTANCE IS ADDING A DIVERSE RESPRESENTATION THAT ALSO INCLUDES A GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN LATINO AND AFRICIAN AMERICAN REPRESENTATION. THE LATINO VOICE IS NOT REPRESENTED IN CITY HALL AND IT IS NOT RESPRESENTED UNDER THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION. INGLEWOOD, VOTE FOR A CHANGE ON NOVEMBER 2, 2010.

  2. Yo pienso que no hay presencia de una vos latina de la comunidad alli, por un lado la barrera idiomatica, el no sentirse como parte del problema.
    Pienso que la comunidad Afroamericana , puede trabajar en otro tipo de estrategias, para ir envolviendo la comunidad Latina, y las demas minorias, hacer que participen mas los lideres de las Iglesias, Los duenos de pequenos negocios, identificar a los Latinos en los comites de padres a nivel de escuela
    etc.

    Inglewood es el Area territorial que identifica mas a nuestros hermanos Afroamericanos.
