Heroes Pay for LA County members? Or a slap in the face?

LA County is Offering a One-Time Bonus

Heroes Pay?

Or a Slap in the Face?

On Thursday, June 10, in the sixth week of bargaining, Los Angeles County finally brought some money to the bargaining table. Their so-called “Appreciation Pay” is a proposed one-time bonus of $750, plus an additional $500 for “essential workers.”

County negotiators did not attempt to clearly define which SEIU 721 members would be considered “essential workers,” and which would not.

The County is still offering NO Cost-of-Living Increase.

While the offer of “Appreciation Pay” is a step in the right direction, it is not enough.

Without a general cost-of-living increase, the County’s offer shows no appreciation at all.

With consumer prices spiking at alarming rates, the County’s refusal to offer even a basic cost-of-living increase would leave SEIU 721 members in worse financial shape in 2022 than we are in today.

The County’s offer – a one-time bonus with no cost-of-living increase –  is not Heroes Pay.

It’s a slap in the face.

So, we’re delivering our message directly to Supervisors’ field offices later this month in a series of lunchtime demonstrations demanding Heroes Pay for All.

All demonstrations listed below will begin at 12:15 PM and continue through the lunch hour. SEIU 721 will provide signs, banners, sound systems, noise makers, and box lunches.

In a year where the US is experiencing the highest recorded inflation rates in our history, the Board wants to offer ZERO cost of living increases? Even a substantial one of 3-4% would be below inflation.

With California reclaiming it’s spot as the top economy in the entire country, what is the justification for punishing the workers who kept LA County afloat?

These are the same politicians that y’all continue to support. They make the rounds between city, county, and state government then do it again. Yet you continue to fall for it. As Twain said, the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different outcome. Do you honestly believe that these people feel any obligation to their constituency?

How are younger workers expected to live out the American Dream and purchase a home when the cost of living in Los Angeles keeps getting more and more expensive. Housing prices keep going up at record rates while wages continue to lag behind. This is not ok we deserve to be fairly compensated.
