After weeks hard-fought advocacy in the wake of the devastating Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst wildfires, LA County has announced that SEIU 721 members impacted by the disasters may access a new bank of 80 hours of Wildfire Leave Time as they recover. This time bank is retroactive to January 7th.
This important victory means that members who need time to file claims, access resources, and begin the process of rebuilding can do so without fear of discipline or exhausting their sick time or vacation hours.
The County will grant up to 80 hours of paid leave for eligible monthly full-time employees. Eligible part-time employees will receive 40 hours of paid leave. This leave applies through December 31, 2025, and will be paid at members’ regular rate of pay.
The Department of Human Resources will provide timecard coding instructions and a fact sheet for accessing Wildfire Leave. Those resources will also be available at: https://employee.hr.lacounty.gov/2025-wildfire-recovery/.
Our union continues the process of reaching out to members in affected areas to assess needs and deliver urgent relief items, including water, personal hygiene products, and food.
