Today is May Day, International Workers’ Day. Today, we honor the legacy of the labor movement that brought us the eight-hour work day, outlawed child labor, and built the American middle class. Let’s celebrate by making our own history. Through our labor movement at USD, we can make a better world for ourselves, our families, our students, and the people who come after us.
USD continues to commit Unfair Labor Practices (ULPs), including failing to bargain in good faith over the effects of course cuts on CAS faculty members, which will affect our students. Our ULP strike authorization vote passed with 90%. Our members agree that it is time to demand the respect we deserve from our employer. We do the majority of the teaching. Students come here for us. We are USD.
And now we are going on strike. From Wed., May 7, at 7 a.m. through Thurs., May 8, at 9 p.m., we will do no labor for the university. We will not hold classes or office hours, we will not go to meetings, answer emails, grade or do course prep. We will withhold our labor.
Celebrate May Day with us by signing your ULP Strike Commitment Card.
When we fight, we win!

JOIN US ON THE PICKET LINES!
We’re calling on all NTT Faculty, students, alumni, community supporters, staff, and tenured and tenure-track colleagues to join us on the picket lines in support!
Picket lines will be held Wed., May 7, and Thurs., May 8, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the east campus entrance at Linda Vista Road and Alcala Park Way.
AND we’re asking everyone to join us for a rally at NOON on Wed., May 7, at the same location, followed by a march through campus to President James T. Harris’ office. There, striking instructors will deliver a letter demanding a fair contract and an end to USD’s union-busting tactics and violations of labor law.

Why are CAS NTT faculty members going on strike?
Our two-day strike comes in protest of the administration’s violations of labor law during negotiations for our first union contract. In particular, we’re speaking out against USD’s failure to bargain over the effects of course cuts that impacted our members for the spring semester — an illegal move that prompted us to file a ULP charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
We’re also concerned that USD is planning mass course cuts in CAS for fall 2025 to punish us for forming a union last year with SEIU Local 721. We’ve reviewed the course schedule: Some 25% of NTT faculty members who taught in fall 2024 are not currently listed for classes in fall 2025.
We can’t reach a fair contract if USD continues to break the law and threatens mass course cuts. The admin’s behavior gives us no confidence that they are working with us productively to reach an agreement that finally starts reversing decades of diminishing worker protections for NTT faculty.

On top of USD’s law-breaking and threats, our elected Bargaining Action Team (BAT) has often felt disrespected over our more than six months of contract negotiations. USD has submitted insulting proposals that offer CAS NTTs little to nothing that goes beyond the status quo on pay, job security, and worker protections.
USD CAS NTT faculty members have had enough. It’s time to withhold our labor and show our collective power! See you on the picket lines!
