Today was a historic day for our USD CAS NTT Faculty Union. We proved that we won’t allow the university to break the law with the first day of our Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike!
We hit the line bright and early at 7 a.m. and solidarity was in the air, as we were joined by our families, our students, our community and even our pets.

At noon, we held a rally where faculty members spoke powerfully about the realities of non-tenure track teaching and how the way that USD has disrespected us, our students and our school by breaking the law only strengthens our resolve to change the status quo through the power of our union and our collective voice.
Students also spoke out with powerful statements of support and solidarity.
Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions and former CA State Assembly member, added her voice to the chorus of support for our cause.

After the rally, dozens of faculty, students and other supporters marched through campus to deliver hundreds of petition signatures to President Harris’ office, demanding a fair bargaining process and fair contract.
In front of the admin building, union members spoke again about our working conditions and implored the university to live its stated values. We were joined by tenured faculty member Kate Boersma as a representative of our tenured colleagues.
We presented our petitions to USD’s attorney, Tom Skinner, who pledged to resolve our issues at the table by the end of the semester.

We then went back to the line and continued our ULP strike picket into the evening.
Day one of our two-day ULP strike sent a powerful message. We’re not going to allow USD to try to break our union. They cannot unilaterally cut courses without bargaining with us over the effects! They cannot ignore labor law to try to maintain the status quo.
