After hearing from animal keepers, landscapers, truck drivers, plumbers and other workers from the Los Angeles Zoo, the Los Angeles City Council voted to move ahead with a multi-track plan to study competing ideas for the future of the Los Angeles Zoo.
After today’s vote, the Council will send out a Request for Proposal for
the zoo, granting CAO Miguel Santana’s request to solicit bids from private contractors to operate the zoo.
But at the same time, a new committee with worker
representation will work to identify
ways to increaseefficiencies and generate revenues at the zoo, while
keeping the facility
public, affordable and accessible.
“Today’s
action elevates our status in the discussions of the future of the
zoo,” said Gardener/Caretaker Adriana Hawkins. “It makes workers full
partners with zoo management and city management.”

space for links to all of the relevant legislation, which will be posted
next week.
